Fraser Island in Queensland’s iconic Great Sandy National Park is home to a large community of Australia’s wild dogs, known as the Dingo. Dingoes spread throughout mainland Australia over 3,500 years ago but because of Fraser Island’s isolation, the community that thrived there mostly escaped the impact of cross breeding with domestic dogs which is the main cause of the diminished population of Dingoes on the mainland.

The Dingoes of Fraser have the most pure genes of the breed in existence today & because of this, domestic dogs have been banned from the Island since 1981. The purity of the Fraser Island dingoes was one of the special values recognized in its World Heritage Listing in 1992. Thus Australia has an obligation to ensure that this genetic integrity is preserved.
