The 2017 Clif Bar Australian Youth Climbing Championships were held in Melbourne on the 19-21 May. This year, unlike any other, saw the Open & Youth categories split into two different events with the Open category event taking place earlier in the year. Over 3 days, the best youth & junior category climbers in Australia were treated to a boulder comp held at Bayside Rock, a lead comp held at Hardrock Climbing in Nunawading & a speed comp that was hosted by Gravity Worx! The format this year was a massive undertaking by all involved so HUGE props to SCA & all those who helped make it all happen. Every day was just as good as the last as climbers moved between bouldering, lead climbing & speed climbing. Each gym that played host this year had their facilities in pristine conditions ready for an enslaught by the masses. The route setting this year was yet again a monumental task but as usual, the route setters pulled some insane hours & got it all done. Not only that, they certainly gave the audience reason to cheer as climbers, styled, dyno’d & heel hooked their way up the various challenges that were set out to stump them.
Set In Photography was engaged to provide media coverage for all three days which definitely kept me on my toes. Pretty stoked to be there to witness the next generation of climbers wow the audience with their strength & technical ability, even in the Youth D category!
Thanks to all the sponsors for support climbing here in Australia, the sport has come a long way in the past couple of years & we look forward to what lays ahead.
