Lake Wabby (commonly known as the disappearing lake) is yet another small freshwater lake situated on the eastern side of Fraser Island in the Great Sandy National Park. Unlike the perched lakes, Wabby is a Barrage Lake which is formed when water flows from a natural spring but is blocked by a sandmass & forms a lake. The lake is directly adjacent to the Hammerstone Sandblow, which is slowly moving into the lake making it smaller every year. Eventually, Lake Wabby will disappear under the sand but for now, it is the deepest lake on the island with a maximum depth of 12m!

This image is taken from Lake Wabby lookout which offers the best views to see just how much sand surrounds this iconic & vulnerable watering hole.
