Urban Climb Milton, the home of legendary bouldering comps just sealed it’s name in the history books over the weekend as the best bouldering event hosted on Australian soil. Their annual boulderfest turned it up to the max over the weekend just gone (August 3-4 2019) with an all time 2 days of bouldering, beats & good vibes. This years event was powered by CLIF Bar, keeping the athletes & photographer alike fueled for the 2 days of action. The event also attracted sponsorship from Scarpa Australia, K2 Basecamp, Pinnacle Sports, Black Diamond & Szent meaning that it really got the chance to make some bold moves & give competitors something new!
With a change in competition scoring format this year, the setters had a bit more free range with the ability to set a better variety of boulders enabling the field to be split by other means which worked a treat & meant that the schedule was down to a tee for both days with all cogs turning in harmony.
Pumpfest rounds were a blast & a bit of a caffeine fueled blur if I’m perfectly honest. There was a literal battalion of Open B/C competitors who were pretty keen to find out what this whole “boulderfest” thing is all about plus the usual suspects competing in the infamous Open A category to see who would be able to put on a show in the finals. No Youth categories this year was another first but that just meant that the setters & event team could actually catch a breath between days instead of having to reset the gym overnight. Not sure exactly how this was received by the youth climbing community but it did bring a different vibe to the event.
Sunday nights Open A Finals was once again one heluva show! The place packed out when the roller doors opened & people gained there way to the best viewpoint for the show. New holds had local climbers stumped & the imagination of the route setters did the rest. This was easily THE BEST OPEN A FINALS I have ever seen & from discussions with everyone I talked to at the bar afterwards, it seems to be a common opinion. There was a perfect balance of crowd pleasing tops, nail biting moments & incredible displays of athleticism & sheer strength! If you missed it, you can always relive the glory via the live stream which you can find HERE.
Set In Stone Photography was proud to be the official media partner for this event covering all the action over the weekend. It was great fun to capture & truly is a community I am proud to be part of!
